2012 : Singapore Green Plan (SGP) 2012

Date: 2012
Place: Singapore

Singapore Green Plan (SGP) 2012 The SGP 2012 Award was launched in 2004 to recognise outstanding individuals, organisations and companies that have contributed significantly to Singapore's efforts towards achieving environmental sustainability, and are role models for environmental protection. The SGP 2012 is Singapore's blueprint for environmental sustainability. Six SGP awards were given out last year.

The Singapore Green Plan 2012 (or SGP 2012 in short) is Singapore's blueprint towards environmental sustainability for the next decade. It is highly focused and action oriented in approach. SGP 2012 is pre-dated by the 1992 Singapore Green Plan, which laid out Singapore's early environmental thrusts.

In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002, the then Ministry of Environment (ENV) formed a WSSD National Preparatory Committee (NPC) to demonstrate our national efforts to coordinate sustainable development activities.

Three Focus Groups were set up to assist the NPC in making detailed preparations and recommendations in consultation with various stakeholders. These are:
Focus Group 1 on Economic Development Issues
Focus Group 2 on Regional and International Issues
Focus Group 3 on Environment and Public Health Issues

The NPC and Focus Groups comprised of members from the Public, Private and People sectors. They include representatives of professionals, businesses and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with the government providing resource persons to assist the focus groups in their work. Each Focus Group discussed the WSSD themes allocated to it and subsequently submited a report, based on their discussions, on the directions, strategies and programmes to help Singapore attain environmental sustainability for the next 10 years.

The consultation exercise as part of the review has ended. We would like to thank the many Singaporeans who have come forward to share your views. The review started in April 2005 with widespread and in-depth consultation and more than 17,000 Singaporeans have participated through various platforms.

Your views and feedbacks submitted from April to August 2005 were channelled to the three appointed Focus Groups as part of the review, for consideration. The Focus Groups have since submitted their recommendations in August 2005. The SGP2012 (2006 edition) has been released, incorporating those Focus Group recommendations supported by MEWR and the SGP2012 Coordinating Committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary (Environment and Water Resources).

Members of the public who wish to give their feedback and views can write to the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) at mewr_sgp@mewr.gov.sg or go to MEWR's feedback page.
