THE WORLD GAMES.
Competitions at the highest level in a multitude of diverse, popular and spectacular sports make up the mainstay of The World Games.
Sports practiced on land, in the air, in and on the water, they all concur in the pursuit of 'Faster, Higher, Stronger'.
At quadrennial intervals, in the years following the Games of the Olympiad, the world’s best athletes in these sports unite in their common search for excellence during The World Games. As the pinnacle in the competition calendar and as a highly visible stage for top athletes to perform on, The World Games generate worldwide exposure for the participating sports and athletes alike.
Above all, The World Games provide the unique setting for thousands of athletes from different sports and countries to join in a celebration of unity and friendship across all boundaries. The World Games are the MAIN EVENT for all these athletes – one marked by sporting exploits as well as by camaraderie.
«THE WORLD GAMES continue to provide an invaluable opportunity for athletes from a variety of sports not currently on the program of the Games of the Olympiad to compete in their own elite multi-sport event and represent their countries as members of a delegation, with National Olympic Committee involvement and support in an increasing number of cases.
The World Games, for this very reason, play an important role in the sports framework of the Olympic Movement.
The World Games have enjoyed exceptional development since their inception in 1981. The 7th World Games 2005 Duisburg were an outstanding success – through the commitment of the International World Games Association, the organizers, the athletes and the national teams involved.
I look forward to the continuing success of The World Games and encourage all partners in the Olympic Movement to support this important event.» - Jacques Rogge – President of the International Olympic Committee
SANTIAGO DE CALI (Spanish pronunciation: [sanˈtjaɣo ðe ˈkali]), simply referred to as Cali, is a city in western Colombia and the capital of the Valle del Cauca Department. With a population of 2,525,548 Cali is the second largest city in the country. It has one of the fastest growing economies and infrastructure in the country because of its geographical location. The city was founded on July 25, 1536 by the Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar.
Cali is the shortened form of the official name of the city Santiago de Cali. The first part of the full name honours Saint James the apostle (Santiago in Spanish) whose feast day is celebrated on July 25. The origin of the word "Cali" comes from the local native Indian tribe the "Calima" or "Calimas" descendants of the "Chibcha" tribe. Others believe that the word "Cali" has Quechua origin, and it was brought by the Yanaconas Indians that came from Quito serving Sebastián de Belalcázar. This theory is related to the fact that near Quito there is an indigenous town named Calicali.
