The 2010 World Science Fiction Convention

Aussiecon 4 is the name of 2010’s World Science Fiction Convention. The World Science Fiction Convention, also known as Worldcon, is usually held in the United States, but this year it will take place in the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre between 2nd and 6th September. The main event at the annual science fiction and speculative fiction festival is the Hugo Awards ceremony - these awards are the prizes "for the best science fiction and fantasy works of the previous year".

Science Fiction

At Worldcon, there are often panel discussions on subjects related to science fiction, such as recent events and discoveries in science, writing, publishing and future technology. Other activities include game playing, the Masquerade costume event, film and video programmes and live performances. In addition to the Hugo Award presentation, the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS) sponsors other activities, and there are many opportunities for socialising and networking.

Aussiecon 4 will offer Australian and international fans, writers, artists and agents opportunities to exchange ideas and inspiration, mingle and learn. Every year, the guests of honour give speeches and presentations. This year’s guests of honour include author Kim Stanley Robinson (Red Mars, Blue Mars and Green Mars), artist and writer Shaun Tan (The Arrival and The Rabbits) and science fiction fan Robin Johnson.

Science Fiction

For dedicated science fiction fans, it seems that Worldcon can be a bit addictive. Although, this year’s convention is in Australia, science fiction fans as well as writers and other industry professionals from all over the world are expected to attend. They go farther than the distance that the typical Londoner travels to buy O2 tickets when their favourite act comes to town. So, put your London theatre tickets to one side and get yourself to Worldcon this year. For passionate and devoted science fiction fans, Australia is not too far away.
